29 July. The Ministry of Education sends instructions to bring language projects into line with the new law.
30 July, The AMPAs1 call for a moratorium on the application of the new multilingualism system in education.
The changes „could be implemented now, without having to wait for the 25/26 school year, when the new law on the use of languages in education will come into full force.“ demands Hablamos Español.
it does not look like there will be a clear and uniform change in the language of instruction in all Valencian schools. In this context, it is helpful to first read the latest information from Hablamos EspañoL, which I have therefore translated here.
Start of the translation:
The Valencian Ministry of Education replied to Hablamos Español that in the 2024/25 school year it will be possible to choose the language of the exams, but they do not guarantee the minimum of 25% in Spanish.
On 11 July, we sent a written request to the Education Council of the Valencian Community (Gloria Lago sends a letter with important demands to the Valencian Minister of Education, Rovira), in which we ask him, in summary, to clarify whether two measures that would significantly alleviate the linguistic imposition suffered so far in the Community will be implemented in the next school year.
They could be implemented now, without having to wait for the 25/26 school year, when the new law on the use of languages in education will come into full force.
The measures are as follows:
Choice of language for exams and other tests.
Modification of the linguistic projects of the schools, which do not even respect the presence of 25% of the official language in a core subject.
The Regional Ministry has replied that it will be possible to choose a language in the assessable tests, but to our second enquiry they gave us an ambiguous and unconvincing answer. They assure us that the Valencian language immersion testing programmes will no longer be in force, but we know that there are schools that do not officially have the testing schedule and that still do not even teach a core subject in Spanish. This is the case, for example, at the CEIP Guillem D'Entença school, where the son of a family advised by Hablamos Español studies. This family succeeded in obtaining a judgement from the High Court of the Valencian Community that the regional ministry must change its SPS as no core subject is taught in Spanish. The Regional Ministry has still not complied with this judgement and insists on introducing this type of linguistic project in schools. We will therefore continue to insist that such a situation does not occur next year.
end of translation
t remains exciting. First the new Valencian government, consisting of the PP and VOX, breaks its promise to allow parents to choose the language of instruction and now it is not even implementing its own law in a timely manner. The victims are the pupils, but they can't vote yet either. Not much use anyway, as you can see from the broken election promise. An important lesson.
