Please please, teach our children at least a quarter in Spanish. This modest request has been met by the highest courts in Spain and also in Catalonia, demanding that the Catalan government provide at least 25% of instruction in Spanish and not in Catalan. After all, the native language of the majority of Catalans is Spanish.

But that doesn't bother the separatists, who are in the Catalan government thanks to the special Catalan electoral system and the electoral situation during the Corona events. Rulings are only recognized if they are in the separatists' favor.

The situation in the Valencian community is not much different. 40,000 signatures had been collected under extremely difficult conditions for a popular legislative initiative for the free choice of the language also in the classroom.

The newspaper El Mundo reported on May 31: „The Catalan decree closes the door to the introduction of 25% Spanish for teaching by school principals who favor it.“

In a complicated decree, Cambray, Catalonia's education minister, „takes away any leeway for centers to comply with the courts' rulings. Today, the regional education minister will underscore this dual strategy by sending 'concrete instructions' to school directors. He will do this on the very day that the deadline set by the TSJC (Highest Catalan Court) for the execution of the judgment expires...“

The president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, said Monday, according to europapress.es, that the decree law on Catalan in the classroom approved by the government „protects the schools, the teachers and the Catalan school model“. How it is supposed to protect the schools and teachers remains completely unclear, but what is clear is that it does not protect the students - and that is what would matter.

On the contrary, the intention is to cement a situation where all Catalan students are taught only in Catalan. It is comparable to this, as if pupils in Cardiff would be taught only in Welsh and would not even be allowed to learn 25% in English.

The situation for the erosion of the judicial system for the maintenance of the language imposition can be observed also in Valencia. With the successful collection for the popular legislation initiative is connected the right to speak directly to the Cortes, the Valencian parliament, as initiators to the parliamentarians, to justify the request. On Friday, May 27, the initiators were informed that they would be denied this right.

As a result, they requested a rally for Tuesday, May 31, in front of the Valencian Parliament. Forbidden! This rally would not be urgent and the Presidium of the Parliament would meet at 12:00. How dare you bother your parliamentarians?

More protest was not allowed

Only twenty people are allowed without permission. The organisation Hablamos Español did not let this be taken away from them. Parliamentarians from the PP, VOX and Ciudadons had left parliament to demonstrate their support.

That is positive, but it is better not to rely on others. The PP is the government in Galicia and is applying the same language imposition as the PSOE and the other coalition members belonging to the Valencian government.

In Catalonia, Hablamos Español, together with Convivencia Cívica, has denounced Minister Cambray for insubordination and distortion of facts. A right step, but even that will not be enough. Probably not much will happen in the summer, it is important to prepare for the autumn. Success is only possible with pressure on the streets.
