„This family that is instrumentalising their son to attack Catalan should lose custody of him, they are psychopaths“ demanded Magí Hildebrandt, Youth Coordinator of the Frente Nacional de Catalunya in a talk show on 8TV and then added via Twitter: „Some (Spanish) settlers are willing to do anything to attack Catalonia, including using a five-year-old child for colonial activism, which is disgusting“.
What triggered this hate speech? The parents of a child had demanded, in accordance with Catalan laws, and won a judgement, that she receive at least 25% Spanish instruction at school and that not all instruction be in Catalan.
This incident was not only reported by Hispanidad. At the moment, all the newspapers are full of this event in Canet de Mar, Catalonia.
It is significant that Spanish lessons are understood as an attack on Catalonia and it is already humiliating when in Spain and also in Catalonia, where the majority of the Catalan people have Spanish as their mother tongue, parents have to go to court to have their child provided with at least 25% Spanish lessons.
Those who wonder whether the parents can now at least count on help from the Catalan government in enforcing their modest legal claim learn: „The government is attacking a family demanding bilingualism in a school in Canet de Mar“. 25% Spanish for native Spanish speakers - this is then even presented as bilingualism, although we know that this is often still banned to the subjects of sport, music and mathematics.
Instead of help, the separatist government of Catalonia is still encouraging the likes of Magí Hildebrandt, as one can learn from El Mundo: „The Minister of Education of the Generalitat (Catalan government) has decided to support the demonstrations called by the most radical independence movement for this Friday at the gates of the school of Canet de Mar to intimidate the family of the five-year-old boy, who is to receive 25% of his education in Spanish due to a court order“.
At least the TSJC (Catalonia's highest court) has asked the government to guarantee the protection of the child in Canet, as reported on 10/12. by ABC. The parents' modest wish is only: „We just want our son to learn in both languages“, El Mundo reports today, Sunday morning.
I spare myself further details, this hateful incident clearly portrays what daily reality can look like in Catalonia if one does not support separatism and language coercion. I won't spare the point that Catalonia has been trilingual (Spanish, Catalan and Aranese) for generations and Catalans who prefer Spanish are not colonial settlers like the whites once were in Indian Territory. As for colonialism, I recommend looking into the particularly brutal history of the Catalan bourgeoisie in colonial South America.
It is time that all official languages in Spain can be used equally and that parents decide on the language of instruction in school, not politicians.
